Along with the Museum of Modern Art, Gunma, which was completed in the same year, it is considered to be a representative work of art museum architecture in its early years. Located in the geographical center of Kitakyushu City on Takami Hill, on the border between Tobata and Yahatahigashi wards, the building is characterized by its innovative appearance of two square rectangles, each 9.6 m square in cross section, looming forward from the slope of the hill, and has become a familiar landmark of the city as "the binoculars on the hill. The entrance, designed in the image of a modern cathedral, has a high ceiling, and natural light is let in through skylights between the cylinders that run symmetrically on both sides. In 1987, the Annex building was added to the east side of the museum, which includes a civic gallery and an atrium, etc. In 2017, the main building underwent a major renovation and reopened.
