It was established in 1974 as the first public art museum in western Japan. As an art museum appropriate for the city of Kitakyushu, which has 1 million citizens, it was started with the basic policy of providing citizens with a place to appreciate art and support creative activities by exhibiting its rich collection at all times and holding outstanding special exhibitions.

The Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art is a branch of the Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art, which has a vast site in Tobata-ku, Kitakyushu, and was opened in 2003 on the 4th and 5th floors of River Walk Kitakyushu, which is adjacent to Kokura Castle on the banks of the Murasaki River. This urban gallery, which brings art closer to visitors, holds special exhibitions in a wide variety of genres. Currently on hiatus.

Kurosaki Civic Gallery
Opened in 2013 (Heisei 25) on the 3rd floor of Com City adjacent to JR Kurosaki Station. Exhibitions of paintings, calligraphy, ceramics, sculpture, textiles, and photography are held there from time to time. Comcity, where the gallery is located, houses many administrative facilities and restaurants, and is easily accessible, making it an easy place to drop by.
