The role of art museums includes the introduction of diverse artworks through exhibitions and educational activities through art, as well as "art collection and research activities" to deepen understanding of artworks by collecting, preserving, and exhibiting artworks that should be preserved for the future. It is no exaggeration to say that the individuality of art museums, of which there are many, is largely characterized by their awareness of and tendency toward their own collections.
The Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art also began collecting artworks before the opening of the museum with its own conception, and today, the collection consists of approximately 100 works of art, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints, mainly of modern and contemporary art from Japan and abroad.8,000The collection includes the following items.
