Collection Exhibition III Special Feature: Painters Who Went Abroad
main building
Saturday, February 8, 2025 - Sunday, May 18, 2025

The course of Japanese art since the Meiji period (1868-1912) has been greatly influenced by the West and other countries. Many Japanese painters who admired Western painting crossed the sea to France, where they not only learned techniques through friendly competition with painters from various countries, but also created their own unique world by fusing them with Japanese art. The works of these painters, who acquired cutting-edge techniques and a free sensibility in such foreign lands, radiate an unshakable presence and leave a strong impression on the viewer.
This exhibition focuses on Japanese painters who were inspired by these trends in modern art, especially in the West, to explore and develop their own artistic expression. The works of Zenzaburo Kojima, who went to France to study Western art, Shu Takahashi, who made Italy his base of production, and Yayoi Kusama, who threw herself into New York, are introduced along with the trends of the times. In addition, masterpieces by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, and others will also be on display.
