Holography, known as stereoscopic imaging, is an optical technology. This technology, which enables the naked eye to see three-dimensional imaginary images, was invented in 1948 by Dennis Gabor, a Hungarian-born British physicist, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1971 for his work in revolutionizing imaging by creating various recording and reproduction methods following the dramatic technological revolution brought about by the invention of the laser in 1960. In 1971, Gabor was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for this achievement. In the field of art, the 1960s saw the emergence of a new genre, holographic art, which attracted the attention of artists.
In Japan, full-scale exhibitions began to be held in the late 1970s, and Seizuko Ishii (1946- ) was one of the first artists to use this technology to create works, which have been shown in numerous exhibitions both in Japan and abroad. Always at the forefront of holography, she is highly regarded as one of the world's leading holography artists.
This exhibition introduces the fascination of holographic art through the largest retrospective of Seizuko Ishii's work to date. The exhibition will create a beautiful and fantastic space where art and science are fused together by freely spun, vivid trails of light, including three-dimensional images. This is an excellent opportunity to experience the world of holographic art, which can only be seen with the naked eye.
