A large collection of American Pop Art on view for the first time in Japan
Pop art flourished in the U.S. in the 1960s and became a worldwide movement. Artists have incorporated everyday symbols directly related to people's lives, such as advertisements, magazines, media, and news, into their artistic expression to depict society in colorful and cynical ways. This exhibition introduces four of Pop Art's leading artists, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, and Jasper Johns, by comparing them to "The Fabulous 4 (FAB4)," the nickname of The Beatles, who were also popular in the 1960s. The FAB4 (The Fabulous 4)", a nickname for The Beatles, who were also popular in the 1960s.
The works on display include approximately 120 prints and posters from the collection of José Luis Ruppérez, one of the world's leading pop art collectors in Spain, all of which are being exhibited in Japan for the first time. In addition, works by Jim Dine, James Rosenquist, Robert Indiana, and Tom Wesselmann, who were active in the same period as "FAB4," will also be exhibited to provide a panoramic view of the world of Pop Art in the United States.
