Exhibitions & Events

The Nihon Bijutsu-in, which sponsors the Inten Exhibition, is a research institute for Japanese painting founded in 1898 by Tenshin Okakura together with Masakuni Hashimoto, Taikan Yokoyama, Shunso Hishida, Kanzan Shimomura, and others. It advocated the revival and innovation of traditional Japanese art, which had been declining due to the transplantation of Western art, and aimed to create a new style of Japanese painting. Although it was forced to temporarily suspend its activities, it was revived under the leadership of Taikan and others and has continued to the present day.

The 106th Inten Exhibition will feature a total of 67 works, including 32 new works by the artists who are members of the Japan Art Institute, award-winning works, and selected works by artists residing in Kyushu. The exhibition will showcase the essence of contemporary Japanese painting, bringing together a diverse range of works from up-and-coming young artists to established masters.
