Exhibitions & Events

Born in the town of Tsuwano, Shimane Prefecture, he spent his childhood dreaming of becoming a painter and imagining all sorts of things in the natural surroundings of the area. In 1961, he quit teaching and became an independent artist, and in 1968, he made his debut as a picture book author with "Fushiginae. Since then, he has been active in a wide range of fields, including painting, picture book illustration, bookbinding, and writing. His beautifully and delicately illustrated works with his unique worldview were popular both in Japan and abroad, and were highly acclaimed, winning numerous awards, including the International Andersen Award for Painters. The origin of these works is projected from his childhood experience of growing up in Tsuwano and his trial-and-error experiences as a teacher.
Focusing on his time as a teacher, the starting point of his creative process, this exhibition introduces works in a variety of genres, organized as if they were school courses. We hope you will enjoy Mitsumasa Anno's world full of humor and mystery.
