Shinya Fujiwara was born in Moji City (now Kitakyushu City), Fukuoka Prefecture in 1944. Starting with India, where he traveled while a student at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, he traveled throughout Asia and published several books of photographs and essays, including "Wandering in India,"Western Pure Land (Amitabha's Buddhist paradise)TibetWandering," "stroll down memory lanebusiness-friendlyIn 1983, his book "Tokyo Adrift" became a bestseller and shocked society. In 1989, he traveled to Western Europe, starting in the U.S. Upon his return to Japan, he turned his camera on Japan, including "A Boy's Port," shot in Moji Port, where he had spent his boyhood. Fifty years after the beginning of his journey, Fujiwara walked through the Tohoku region immediately after the Great East Japan Earthquake, standing in an uninhabited town in Corona, against the backdrop of news reports of the devastation of today's world. Fujiwara's vision of people living and eventually dying has been sublimated into the present tense of "Memento Mori" (Think of Death), which illuminates our "now" in a new form.
Fujiwara's expressive activities are noteworthy in that he traverses all media, including photography, writing, painting, and calligraphy, and has achieved excellence in each of these areas.
With "prayer" as its keyword, this exhibition will bring together a selection of Fujiwara's photographic works, from his early to his latest. A large-scale solo exhibition in Fujiwara's hometown of Kitakyushu, the exhibition will be held simultaneously at the Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art and the Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Literature to present a three-dimensional view of Shinya Fujiwara's diverse work.
