Yokoyama Taikan (1868-1958) is one of Japan's leading Japanese painters. Taikan deeply supported Tenshin Okakura's philosophy of protecting Japan's cultural assets and encouraging new expression based on the traditions of Japanese art for the future, and participated in Tenshin's founding of the Japan Art Institute. Taikan studied Western painting techniques and took up the challenge of developing an innovative style of expression known as "fuzzy body. After Tenshin's death, Taikan and others took over his legacy and rebuilt the Bijutsu-in. In 1937, Taikan was awarded the first Order of Cultural Merit for his outstanding achievements, contributing greatly to the development of Japanese art culture as well as the Japanese painting world.
This exhibition features 50 masterpieces by Yokoyama Taikan, a master of modern Japanese painting, from the collection of the Adachi Museum of Art, renowned for its collection of modern and contemporary Japanese paintings. Visitors are invited to enjoy Taikan's painting from his early years to his later years.

Adachi Museum of Art

The museum is located in Yasugi City, Shimane Prefecture, and opened in 1970 based on the collection of Zenyasu Adachi (1899-1990), a businessman from the same area. The museum's collection includes approximately 2,000 works, including modern and contemporary Japanese paintings, ceramics by Kitaoji Rosanjin, woodcarvings, and paintings for children. The museum boasts one of the largest collections in Japan, including approximately 120 works by Yokoyama Taikan. The vast Japanese garden, created by Mr. Zenkang based on the museum's founding principle of "harmony between Japanese gardens and Japanese paintings," allows visitors to enjoy the beauty of nature in each of the four seasons. It is also known for being consecutively voted the best garden in Japan in the garden rankings conducted by the Journal of Japanese Gardening, an American magazine specializing in Japanese gardens.
