Collection Exhibition IIISpecial Feature: Famous Places in Edo as Seen in Ukiyoe
main building
First Semester: Saturday, January 14, 2023 - Sunday, March 5, 2023 Second Semester: Saturday, March 18, 2023 - Sunday, May 7, 2023

In the late Edo period (1603-1867), when highways and inns were developed, interest in travel, including day-trip excursions, increased among the general public, and the "Meisho-e" genre of ukiyo-e became firmly established in the ukiyo-e world. Meisho-e depict the scenery of popular sightseeing spots and local specialties, giving us a glimpse into the kind of travel that people of the time took and the kind of travel they longed to take. Meisho-e also depict seasonal events such as cherry blossom viewing at Gotenyama and fireworks displays along the Sumida River, as well as daily pleasures such as the shibai-goya and yoshiwara theaters where many people gather, and convey the culture, customs, and fads of the Edo period to the present.
From the museum's collection of approximately 1,300 ukiyo-e prints, this exhibition features pictures of famous places by Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Hiroshige, Utagawa Sadahide, Hasegawa Sadanobu, Kobayashi Seichika, and others, introducing famous places and travel scenes of the Edo period. In addition, masterpieces by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Claude Monet, and others will also be on display. In addition, the late works of Kazuo Matsuno, a native of Kitakyushu City and renowned "Shin Seinen" (New Youth) painter, will also be introduced.

special feature (e.g. in a magazine)
Kazuo Matsuno, a scenery from my past
Kazuo Matsuno (1895-1973) produced numerous illustrations for translated novels and detective stories, mainly for Shin Seinen, a magazine in which Edogawa Rampo and Yokomizo Seishi were active. Although Matsuno was particularly good at depicting Western characters and customs in translated novels, it may not be well known that he became familiar with ink and wash paintings in his later years. This exhibition introduces Matsuno's ink and wash landscapes, which evoke nostalgic memories.
