  • Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art 50th Anniversary Grand Collection Exhibition - At that time, at this place. -Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art
The history of a museum is the history of its collection.
On November 3, 1974, the Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art opened as the first large-scale public art museum in western Japan. The museum's collecting activities predate the 1974 opening, having taken over the collection of its predecessor, the Yawata City Museum of Arts and Crafts (opened in 1958 and later renamed the Kitakyushu Municipal Yawata Art Museum in 1963), and have continued to collect mainly modern and contemporary art. To date, the museum has collected and preserved approximately 8,000 works of art, and has planned and held numerous exhibitions as a result of its research.
This exhibition commemorates the museum's 50th anniversary by systematically reviewing the history of the museum's collection over the past half century. The exhibition will unravel the history and characteristics of the museum's collection through a selection of approximately 200 items.
The history of the museum's collection is also the accumulation of memories of encounters with artworks by visitors to the museum. We hope that this exhibition will provide visitors with an opportunity to reconnect with works they encountered "at that time and place," as well as to experience the appeal of the museum's collection through new encounters.
