Collection Exhibition III Special Feature: Arata Isozaki "Reduction" Series
main building
January 4, 2024 (Thursday) - May 6, 2024 (Monday, national holiday)

Architect Arata Isozaki (1931-2022), who designed the Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art, the Kitakyushu Central Library, the West Japan General Exhibition Center, and the Kitakyushu International Conference Center, passed away in December 2022. Isozaki was a leading figure in the field of postmodern architecture in Japan and abroad, curated architecture and art exhibitions around the world, chaired international symposiums, and was active in a wide range of fields including thought, art, design, cultural theory, and criticism. In the "Reduction" series of prints published in 1983, Isozaki's non-residential projects designed in the 1970s and 1980s, including this museum, became the motifs for his prints. The series visualizes the moment when architecture is born from the hands of an architect.
In memory of Isozaki, the Collection Exhibition III will feature 12 prints from the "Reduction" series, newly acquired in 2023. In addition, works from the collection related to architecture, such as quasi-Western-style buildings depicted in Kaika-e paintings, will also be introduced.
