Lautrec and the Belle Epoque Paris - 1900
main building
Saturday, December 18, 2021 - Sunday, February 6, 2022

From the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, Paris developed greatly as one of the largest cities in the world. During this period, which was later called the "Belle Epoque" (meaning "beautiful age" or "good times"), Paris was rapidly urbanized with the opening of the subway system and the installation of electric streetlights, while at the same time popular culture flourished with the publication of many newspapers and magazines, the showing of movies, and the opening of halls for dancing and enjoying music. In the field of art, art movements such as Symbolism, Art Nouveau, and Fauvisme emerged, and Parisians enjoyed a brief period of prosperity until World War I.
One artist who epitomizes the hedonistic atmosphere of this era is Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901). Born into a prestigious aristocratic family, Lautrec is known for his paintings of people in cabarets and dance halls, and is considered a pioneer graphic designer who created many colorful, multi-colored posters, which were attracting attention as a new method of expression at the time. This exhibition features approximately 300 works by Lautrec, Degas, Mucha, Dufy, and others, and introduces the art of Paris, which reflected the glamorous times, including theaters and entertainment venues, women's fashion, and people's lives.
