Yoshio Yoshimura Exhibition: Beyond the Superlative
annex
Saturday, April 16 - Sunday, May 29, 2022

Superlative technique? Yoshio Yoshimura's pencil drawings cannot be described in such simple terms. The vast number of self-portraits he drew every day, the front pages of newspapers in which he copied every single word, the exquisite flowers drawn with colored pencils that are more than 10 meters long... Yoshimura's works are all superbly realistic, but they also take the viewer by surprise. Yoshio Yoshimura's works are all extremely realistic, yet have an amazing quality that takes the viewer's breath away.
Yoshio Yoshimura, born in Yamaguchi Prefecture in 1950, came into the limelight in 2007. Yoshio Yoshimura's works exhibited at the "Roppongi Crossing 2007" exhibition (Mori Art Museum, Tokyo) were the talk of the town, and at the age of 57, he suddenly became a darling of the contemporary art scene.
As a retrospective exhibition of Yoshio Yoshimura's work, this exhibition will present a complete overview of his artistic career, including the monotone prints and drawings of his early years, the colorful flowers of his later years, and the self-portraits he continued to paint throughout his life.
We invite you to "witness" with your own eyes the sincere works of Yoshio Yoshimura, who sadly passed away in 2013, that are not only skillful but also question the meaning of painting and life.
This is the first time the event will be held in Kyushu.

Mundane Scenery
Print works and pencil drawings are the main focus of his early works. One of the characteristics of his production is the mechanical method of drawing squares on a photograph of the subject matter and then enlarging and copying it further, square by square.
Self-portrait forest
Yoshimura painted over 2,000 self-portraits during his lifetime.
In a series of large self-portraits on the front page of newspapers, we are drawn in by the variety of expressions that reflect the content of the articles, even though they are all the same face of the artist.
a gathering of many beautiful women (talented people)
Around 1990, Yoshimura began producing colored pencil drawings of flowers.
The subject flowers were cosmos and poppies blooming in a fallow field in Tokuchi, Yamaguchi Prefecture, his hometown where he moved from Hiroshima in 1985.
